Machinery of Government Changes

08 November 2005

The Prime Minister has announced the following Machinery of Government changes. Departments will implement these with immediate effect.

The changes come about as part of a review being conducted by Gus O’Donnell, the Cabinet Secretary, into the role and functions of the Cabinet Office.

Government Car and Despatch Agency

The Government Car and Despatch Agency will transfer to the Department for Transport.

The GCDA will be responsible for procuring and managing the Government Car Service fleet. Responsibility for guidance about decisions on the choice of cars available for individual Ministers and Ministerial and official use of the Government Car Service and any related propriety issues will remain with the Cabinet Office.

Government Social Research Unit

Responsibility for the Government Social Research Unit will transfer to Her Majesty’s Treasury.

The GSRU is responsible for leading the Government Social Research (GSR) service. This transfer should further improve coordination between the professional units responsible for social research and economics.
