Long-term pensions plan is vital says PM

30 November 2005

Prime Minister Tony BlairThe government will ensure pensioners are provided for in the future, Tony Blair insisted today.

On the day the Turner Report into pensions was published, the PM told Parliament it was vitally important to ensure the country’s long term pension provision.

"We will publish our response next year," he said during PMQs. "I’ve got no doubt at all we will end up with a long term framework for pensions that has as its basis a decent basic state pension and a much simplified way for people to save."

The Pensions Commission report proposes a gradual rise in the state pension age to 68. A National Pension Savings Scheme would also be launched, with many workers automatically enrolled.

Commission head Lord Turner said the UK’s pension system currently faced ’significant problems’.

The PM’s spokesman said the government welcomed the report and that ‘nothing should be ruled in or out’.
