The Prime Minister has today appointed Anish Kapoor as a Trustee of the Tate Gallery. The term of appointment will be for four years from 22 November 2005.
Biographical Details
Anish Kapoor is an internationally successful and immensely respected sculptor. After studying at Hornsey College of Art and then the Chelsea School of Art, he went on to teach at Wolverhampton Polytechnic. His first solo exhibition was in Paris in 1980, and from that point he rapidly gained an international reputation, with a succession of one-man shows held annually throughout the world. He has represented Britain at the Paris and Venice Biennales, and won the Turner Prize in 1991. Examples of his work are seen in many public and private collections. In response to the Building of the Tate Collection Campaign, which was launched in October 2004, he offered earlier this year a new work which is currently being fabricated. He served on the board of Arts Council England from 1998 to 2002, and was elected Royal Academician in 1999. He lives and works in London.
Notes for Editors
The Tate’s mission, laid down by the 1992 Museums and Galleries Act, is to increase public knowledge, understanding and appreciation of art. Its responsibilities are safeguarding and enhancing its assets which are the collections, expertise in the collections and subject area, and the buildings. The Gallery seeks to spread the benefits of those assets by maximising access and developing value for visitors, satisfying stakeholders and through effective organisation and sound financial management. Trustees of the Tate are not remunerated.
Traditionally three of the Tate’s twelve Trustees are practicing artists. Appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process.
