National Portrait Gallery appointment of David Cannadine

The Prime Minister has re-appointed Professor David Cannadine D. Phil, Litt.D, F.B.A. to the Board of the National Portrait Gallery for a period of four years from 7 December 2005. Professor David Cannadine was elected as Chair of the Gallery with effect from 14 July 2005.

Biographical Note

Professor David Cannadine D. Phil, Litt.D, F.B.A. has been Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother Professor of History in the Institute of Historical Research since 2003. He has previously been Professor of History and Director of Historical Research in the University of London, held chairs in history at Columbia University, and taught and lectured at Cambridge University. Among many other appointments, Professor Cannadine is a member of the Advisory Committee of the Royal Mint; a Commissioner of English Heritage; a member of the Eastern Regional Committee of the National Trust; a Trustee of the British Empire and Commonwealth Museum; a member of the Editorial Board of the History of Parliament; Vice President of the British Records Society; and a Trustee of the Kennedy Memorial Trust. Professor Cannadine’s academic career has focused on historical research and archives in both the UK and the USA. He has published many works on UK society in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. He is a regular broadcaster on radio and TV.

Professor Cannadine has not been involved in any political activity in the past five years.

As an institution it fulfils a number of roles relating to the historic and contemporary aspects of this collection: research and academic role, and educational role and a wider role within public life.
