Tony Blair has thanked more than 150 school governors by holding a special reception in Downing Street.
He wanted to recognise the importance they play in improving the education of Britain’s kids, and told them:
"Children need the drive that governors bring to the system. Governors are a great example of voluntary work. Thank you for all the work you do."
Governing bodies in England and Wales are responsible for all major decisions about schools and their future. They set the school’s strategic aims and monitor and evaluate performance.
There are almost 400,000 governor and school board places, making it the largest volunteering force in the UK.
On future educational achievements, the PM said the education system was in the process of change and it was important for governors take on a broader interest.
He added:
"We can’t afford to achieve just 20 per cent or 60 per cent of excellence in schoolchildren. We will fall behind as an economy. We need to be raising standards the entire time and for that your input is important".
