Casey defends the "decent majority"

17 January 2006

Louise Casey, head of the anti-social behaviour unitEveryone has to "give respect and get respect" to deal with anti-social behaviour.

That's the view of Louise Casey, head of the government's Respect unit, who took part in a live Q and A session on the Downing Street website.

She answered dozens of questions on topics including ASBOs, fireworks, policing and parenting. Other topics included violent video games, prostitution and housing.

Answering a comment about returning power to the "decent majority" Ms Casey said:

"Everyone has to stand together. The Respect Action Plan makes clear that we need to tackle with new tough measures the minority of people who don't play by the rules."

She went on:

"Our slogan is Give respect, Get Respect and I only hope people read the actual plan...(it's about) recognising that almost everyone of any age group understands what respect is and wants to give it and get it."

Many thanks to all those who sent in questions. We had several hundred and even though Louise stayed on for an extra hour to answer as many as possible, we ran out of time and weren't able to deal with all of them.
