Privy Council Appointment

The Queen has been pleased to approve that the Honourable Lord Kingarth, a Scottish judge of the Inner House of the Court of Session be sworn of Her Majesty's Most Honourable Privy Council.

Notes for Editors

The proposal to appoint Scottish judges of the Inner House of the Court of Session to the Privy Council is in accordance with the established procedure in England, Wales and Northern Ireland by which judges automatically become Privy Counsellors when appointed Lord Justices of the Court of Appeal.

Derek Robert Alexander Emslie, the Honourable Lord Kingarth:

Born 1949 and educated at Edinburgh Academy, Trinity College Glenalmond, Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge and the University of Edinburgh. A Senator of the College of Justice in Scotland since 1997. Advocate, 1974; Standing Junior Counsel, DHSS, 1979-87; Advocate Depute, 1985-88; QC (Scot), 1987; part time Chairman: Pension Appeal Tribunal (Scotland), 1988-95; Medical Appeal Tribunal (Scotland), 1990-95. Vice-Dean, Faculty of Advocates, 1995-97.
