Read the Government’s response to this epetition.
Full response:
The Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) has recently entered into a public consultation on both the principle and method of badger culling in areas of high bovine Tuberculosis (TB) incidence in cattle.
During the consultation period, which ran from 15 December 2005 to 10 March 2006, DEFRA received over 35,000 responses.
Any decision regarding the necessity of a badger cull to control and reduce bovine TB would take into account the full range of views that respondents expressed to this consultation.
The decision to go ahead with a cull would only be made if the available evidence suggests that it would be successful in the long term in achieving a reduction of bovine TB, and that a cost-effective, practical, sustainable and humane policy could be developed and implemented.
Further information on badgers and bovine TB can be found at www.defra.gov.uk.
