New Procurator General and Treasury Solicitor

The Queen has been pleased to approve that Paul Jenkins, at present Solicitor, Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) and Department of Health, and Director General, DWP, be appointed in succession to Dame Juliet Wheldon DCB QC as Her Majesty’s Procurator General, Treasury Solicitor and Head of the Government Legal Service.

Dame Juliet is leaving in July after six years in the post.

Biography:

Mr Paul Jenkins (51) was educated at Harrow County School for Boys and Manchester University. He was called to the Bar by the Middle Temple in 1997.

He joined Government Legal Service in 1979 as a litigation lawyer in the Treasury Solicitor’s Department, dividing his time between public and competition law. From 1986 to 1990 he was a legal adviser to HM Treasury before moving to the Monopolies and Mergers Commission in 1990. In 1992 he become the first Legal Adviser to the newly-created Department of National Heritage, subsequently the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.

He was appointed as Legal Adviser to the Lord Chancellor’s Department in 1998 and then Director General, Legal and International Group in the DCA. Since 2004 he has been Director General Law, Governance and Special Policy at DWP and the Legal Adviser to both DWP and the Department of Health.

He is a Master of the Bench of the Middle Temple and on the Board of the Hampstead Theatre.
