The Prime Minister has appointed Admiral Sir Alan West GCB, DSC to the Board of the Imperial War Museum with effect from 1st July 2006 for a period of four years.
Biographical Notes:
Admiral Sir Alan West joined the Navy in 1965 and has spent the majority of his career at sea, serving in 14 different ships and commanding three of them. Promotion to Admiral came in November 2000 when he took up the post of Commander-in-Chief Fleet, NATO; Commander-in-Chief East Atlantic; and NATO Commander Allied Naval Forces North. During this period he reorganised the Fleet Headquarters. He also organised the Royal Navy’s response in the wake of the September 11 attacks on the United States. Appointed as First Sea Lord and Chief of the Naval Staff in September 2002, Sir Alan is a member of the Defence Council and Admiralty Board; he is also the First and Principal Naval Aide-de-Camp to Her Majesty The Queen. He steps down from these appointments this year.
Admiral Sir Alan West is Chancellor of Southampton Solent University but holds no other public appointments and has not carried out any political activity in the last five years.

The Museum was looking for a recently retired, or retiring, senior Naval Officer.
The Imperial War Museum illustrates and records all aspects of the two World Wars and other military operations involving Britain or the Commonwealth since 1914.

The posts are not remunerated. Reasonable expenses can be claimed.
The appointments have been made in accordance with the OCPA Code of Practice. Appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process.
