Press briefing from the Prime Minister’s Official Spokesman on: 7/7 and Deputy Prime Minister
7/7
The Prime Minister’s Spokesman (PMS) said that today was the anniversary of the 7/7 London bombings, a day of quiet, dignified reflection and remembrance shared by hundreds of thousands of people in London and throughout the UK. The Prime Minister will observe the two-minute silence with members of the emergency services. The Prime Minister had issued the following words:
"This time last year in two days London experienced triumph and then tragedy but it turned the same face towards both - caring, compassionate, tolerant and determined in the face of a difficult challenge.
Today is a day of remembrance across London and the United Kingdom. It is a chance for the whole nation to come together to offer comfort and support to those who lost loved ones or were injured on that terrible day.
This is a time when our country unites across all races, religions and divides and stands in solidarity with all those who have suffered so much, in sympathy with them and in defence of the values we share.
It is also an opportunity to reflect on the extraordinary efforts of our emergency services, transport staff, health workers and members of the public whose courage, professionalism and humanity won the admiration of the world."
The PMS told journalists that Tessa Jowell would observe the two-minute silence in Regents Park.
Deputy Prime Minister
Asked if there might be an inquiry into John Prescott by Sir John Bourn after comments by Sir Gus O’Donnell last night, the PMS said that the Cabinet office were answering questions on Sir Gus O’Donnell. The Prime Minister’s Official Spokesman had already dealt with all the issues surrounding this throughout the week, at great length, and she had nothing further to add.
Asked what the point of Sir John Bourn was, the PMS said that we had set out Sir John Bourn’s terms of reference at the time of his appointment, she would refer journalists to that.
Put to her that this would be a great opportunity to demonstrate what Sir John Bourn did and to clear the Deputy Prime Minister’s name, the PMS said that we had answered questions of that nature earlier in the week and she had no more to add to what we said then.
Asked if the Prime Minister or Deputy Prime Minister had any meetings scheduled with Mr. Anschutz this week, the PMS said that she wasn’t aware of any in the Prime Minister’s diary and people should speak to the ODPM for details of Deputy Prime Minister’s engagements.
Asked if the Deputy Prime Minister would be in charge when the Prime Minister was on holiday, the PMS said that the situation was as usual.
