Royal Commission Environmental Pollution Appointments

The Queen has been pleased to approve the appointment of Professor Michael H Depledge from 1 September and re-appointment of Dr Ian Graham-Bryce CBE FRSE from 12 April as members of the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution for terms of three years each.

Biographical Note:

Professor Michael Depledge is currently the Keeley Visiting Fellow at Wadham College, Oxford University and Senior Science Advisor at Plymouth Marine Laboratory. He was formerly the Chief Scientific Advisor to the Environment Agency of England and Wales. As a post-doctoral research fellow at the Brompton Hospital and later at the Royal Marsden Hospital, he studied lung damage in the severely ill. From 1983 to 1987 he lectured in Physiology at the Medical School of the University of Hong Kong and was then appointed to the first Chair of Ecotoxicology in Europe at Odense University, Denmark. In 1994 he returned to the United Kingdom to take up the Chair of Marine Biology and Ecotoxicology at the University of Plymouth. In 1996 he became a founding Director of the Plymouth Environmental Research Centre.

Dr Ian Graham-Bryce is a member of the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution; Honorary Vice-President of the Scottish Association for Marine Science (immediate Past President); and Chair of the East Malling Trust for Horticultural Research. He is a Past President of The Society of Chemical Industry, The Association of Applied Biologists and The British Crop Production Council and was also formerly a member of the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC).

From 1994 to 2000 he was Principal and Vice Chancellor, University of Dundee and from 1986 to 1994 he was Head of Environmental Affairs Division at Shell Internationale Petroleum Maatschappij B.V. From 1979 to 1986 he was Director of East Malling Research Station in Kent and from 1975 to 1979 was Deputy Director of Rothamsted Experimental Station in Harpenden.
