National Museum of Science & Industry

The Prime Minister has reappointed Professor Ann Dowling CBE and Martin Smith as Trustees of the National Museum of Science & Industry (NMSI) with effect from 25 August 2004, for a period of four years.

Biographical Notes

Ann Dowling is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Cambridge University, and has been a Fellow of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge since 1979. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society and of the Royal Academy of Engineering. She has sat on a number of engineering/science committees including the Council of the Royal Academy of Engineering (1998-2002), serving as a Vice President (1999-2002). Professor Dowling was Trustee of the Ford of Britain Trust (1993-2002) and has been a member of the Cambridge European Trust since 1994. She is a member of the EPSRC Council. Professor Dowling is also a Non-Executive Director of CMI Ltd, and a technical consultant to Rolls Royce plc.

Martin Smith is Deputy Chairman of New Star Asset Management Ltd. He has been involved in the financial services sector for more than 30 years. He is also a senior adviser to Bain Capital and Phoenix Equity Partners. He is a board member of Odgers Ray and Berndtson and Chairman of Amerindo Internet Fund plc. His pro-bono responsibilities include Chairman of the English National Opera, the Bath Mozartfest and the Board of Advisers of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. Mr Smith is also a Trustee of Wigmore Hall, IMS Prussia Cove, The Becket Collection and The Voices Foundation.

Professor Ann Dowling and Martin Smith have not been involved in any political activity in the last five years.

Notes for Editors

The National Museum of Science & Industry incorporates the Science Museum in London, the National Museum of Photography, Film and Television in Bradford, the National Railway Museum in York and the Wroughton outstation in Wiltshire. Locomotion: The National Railway Museum in Shildon, is due to open at the end of September. The Museum's aim is to promote the public understanding of the history and contemporary practice of science, medicine, technology and industry. Trustees are not remunerated.
